We are currently seeking the right candidate for the position of:
SHIP MASTER (BASED IN CHUUK)
The Ship Master holds full command of the landing craft and is responsible for ensuring safe navigation, regulatory compliance, and operational integrity at all times. This role ensures the safety and welfare of all onboard, maintains a culture of safety, discipline, and teamwork, and upholds the professional image of the organization. The Ship Master also plays a key leadership role in developing crew capabilities, maintaining asset readiness, and supporting the strategic objectives of the C4L Transport and Logistics Program. The role reports to the Marine and Logistics Manager.
The Ship Master will be responsible for the following duties:
- Navigate vessels safely and efficiently while adhering to all maritime regulations and managing crew members to ensure competent duty performance
- Manage all vessel operations including transportation, fuel management, vessel cleanliness, and maintaining professional appearance standards
- Ensure strict safety compliance by following vessel handling guidelines, maintaining safety equipment inventory, and conducting regular emergency drills
- Meet regulatory requirements including timely filing of reports such as Notices of Arrival and maintaining compliance with state and federal maritime regulations
- Coordinate operational activities including voyage schedules, maintenance programs, and navigational watches in collaboration with Program Managers and Engineers
- Conduct risk assessments for weather and marine conditions while developing and implementing contingency plans to protect assets, crew, and public safety
- Lead team development by training new crew members, overseeing passenger activities, and serving as Rescue Team Leader with backup support capabilities
- Maintain vessel readiness through preventative and corrective maintenance planning while ensuring equipment and systems remain fully operational
- Ensure environmental compliance by adhering to environmental regulations, implementing waste disposal procedures, and supporting company sustainability policies
- Drive continuous improvement by documenting lessons learned from incidents, seeking stakeholder feedback, and participating in audits with prompt corrective actions
She/he is to ensure that all tasks performed are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with the company’s operating procedure guideline.
Qualification & Experience
Essential
- Five years of experience working aboard or operating small boats, including at least two years as captain or mate aboard vessels carrying multiple crew members.
- Demonstrated knowledge of local regulatory requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Sea Port Management Act and Regulations
- Knowledge of sea survival techniques
- Knowledge of local and international emergency response protocols and systems
- Proficiency in the use of Aid to Navigation equipment
- Demonstrated successful experience in the problem identification and risk prevention requirements
- Knowledge of advance fire fighting skills
- Outgoing and friendly demeanor, able to engage and communicate easily with passengers and crew.
- Class 5 Master License
- FSM Boat Master License
Desirable
- Aware of fuel handling, spill prevention, and environmental protection practices.
- Safety of Life at Sea training
