Ships Master – Water Taxi

The Ships Master will be responsible for managing and operating a 14-meter passenger vessel in the Chuuk Lagoon. This vessel will serve as a water taxi and ambulance. It is the duty of the Ship Master to ensure the safety and wellbeing of guests and crew, to conduct the ship’s affairs in accordance with established policies and direction from the Operations Manager, to set a high standard of personal and professional conduct, maintain shipboard morale and uphold the company’s purpose and mission.

The Ships Master must be wholly familiar with the handling characteristics (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.). The Ships Master must maintain the required logbooks according to established practices and formats; update and display all necessary licenses as required by FSM TC&I and other state and federal regulatory agencies; oversee all crew members, ensuring that each understands and performed assigned duties adequately; and personally provide hands-on training and orientation to new crew members to help ensure command-ready competence, or assign this task to an experienced crew member. Additionally, the Ships Master will be responsible for monitoring work schedules of all crew members, coordinating with First Mate and department heads, instruct all participants in navigational watches on standing orders and establish watch schedules, and conduct emergency drills and logging written drill reports. Furthermore, the Ships Master should produce timely and proper filling of all state and federal reports, i.e. Notices of Arrival; oversee all passenger activities; and track purchases, keep accurate accounts and maintain expenses within budget amounts.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential Desirable
We are seeking an individual with:

  • FSM Citizenship;
  • FSM Master Certification;
  • Five years of experience working aboard or operating small boats, two of the five years of experience as captain or mate aboard vessels carrying multiple crew members;
  • First aid, CPR and basic safety training;
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening;
  • Must have sufficiently acute hearing, eyesight and depth perception to meet the demands of at-sea service;
  • Must be capable of using escape hatches and boarding/disembarking survival craft unassisted.
  • An outgoing and friendly demeanor, able to engage and communicate easily with passengers and crew.
